What Operating System? If Win98 using FAT32 there is a 2GB file size limit. The NTFS file system would alleviate the problem and it works with Win2k or WinXP. Maybe there's a freeware or cheap shareware utility to use a 2nd NTFS format drive with win98. Win2k or Winxp upgrade will ask you if you want to go NTFS (BACKUP important stuff first).

IMPORTANT: Backup everything before changing drive formats e.g. Partitionmagic.

Good luck

Im on a Mac using OSX 10.3.3 but I think there may be a problem with the actual file-I dont think that it was completely converted. Somehow, either by ftp or http download, it shows that it is only 2048 in size during the download process. However, the mpg1 file is the complete movie. Have you found any mac software that will take mpg1 files and convert to mpg2 cleanly?
